Biography

Michael Petrie is the Founder/CEO of Webutation, Inc and Cyphr.LLC., where he leads innovation in social media intelligence & brand defense solutions for the insurance, government, risk, & cybersecurity markets. With more than three decades of experience as a private investigator & entrepreneur, Petrie is regarded as an original pioneer in open-source intelligence (OSINT) & social media investigations. Beginning his investigative career in the 1990s, he quickly became recognized for developing advanced analytic methodologies & applying technology to fraud detection/risk mitigation.

Petrie 1st gained industry recognition by creating the 1st manual social media investigative protocol & data mining programs used within the insurance and legal sectors. He was the co-founder and driving force behind Social Detection, Inc (VIA and DIGG-iT), the industry’s first social media investigations platform built specifically for the insurance market, which was ultimately acquired in 2020. Through Social Detection and later through Webutation, Petrie has saved clients millions of dollars by identifying fraudulent claims, mitigating risks, and providing impactful reports.

Renowned as a speaker and subject matter expert, Petrie regularly advises leading organizations, insurance carriers, and government bodies worldwide on digital investigations, social intelligence, and OSINT education.
