Biography

Mariela began her insurance career in 1988 and brings with her 36 years of insurance experience, with 25 of those being in leadership roles in both SIU and Claims. Aside from insurance companies, Mariela's career encompasses being a Special Agent with the National Insurance Crime Bureau, as part of the Mid-Atlantic Task Force, covering PA, NJ, and DE. Mariela is a member of the National African American Insurance Association (NAAIA) and an active advocate for Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI). In June of 2022, Mariela was designated as one of the non-attorney members of the Florida Bar Grievance Committee for the 11th Judicial Circuit for Miami-Dade County. Mariela attended the University of South Florida where she pursued a double major in Criminal Justice and Voice Performance. She holds FCLS, CATI, and CCP designations, and is currently working on her ACP. In 2019, Mariela was the recipient of the Jerry Zappolo Distinguished Service Award,  the highest honor and most prestigious award presented to an individual by the FIFEC (Florida Insurance Fraud Education Committee) Board of Directors. Mariela currently serves as Chair of the Fraud Risk Committee for the State of Florida P&C Insurance Fraud Task Force, and in December 2023 was elected to the Board of the Coalition Against Insurance Fraud, where she is also an active member of their Fraud Risk Task Force . She is currently the National Director of SIU & Fraud Compliance for Assurant, based out of Miami, FL.
