Biography

Kara is Management & Professional Liability Counsel. She works as a client adviser in USI’s Director and Officer and management and professional liability practice group. She counsel clients on corporate governance, executive and corporate risk, and professional liability insurance language, issues, and claims.
She is a licensed attorney and frequent speaker and writer on topics related to Director & Officer insurance, including how trends in securities litigation, SEC and DOJ enforcement, Foreign Corrupt Practices, M&A litigation, corporate transactions, and other matters impact a company's risk and how that risk intersects with D&O and other professional liability insurance.
Prior to joining USI in 2010, Kara practiced the commercial litigation groups of Hughes & Luce (K&L Gates) and the Corporate Compliance, Investigations & Defense team at Andrews Kurth. Her practice focused on a range of regulatory and financial issues including securities fraud; securities registration violations; the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act; revenue recognition and other accounting and financial reporting issues; insider trading, commercial bribery; investment adviser regulations; Medicare and Medicaid Fraud and Stark law violations; white collar criminal defense; and audit and special litigation committee representation. She began her legal career as a law clerk for the Texas Supreme Court. She is a summa cum laude graduate of Texas Tech School of Law.
Kara is active in the community as a board member of the Dallas Division of the March of Dimes; a member of the Professional Liability Underwriting Society Texas Steering Committee, co-chair of the American Bar Association's D&O Insurance Committee, and as networking co­ chair for Attorneys Serving the Community. Her background also includes several years as a journalist prior to attending law school.
