Biography

Brian Sokoloff is a founding partner of Sokoloff Stern LLP.  Before that, in 1998, he was a founding partner in Miranda & Sokoloff LLP.  He graduated summa cum laude from Baruch College in 1982 and cum laude from Brooklyn Law School in 1986.  Mr. Sokoloff represents municipalities, school districts, public authorities, and public officials throughout the State of New York, focusing largely on the defense of civil rights, employment discrimination, police liability, free speech and religion, land use, municipal, election, and education matters.

Before entering private practice, Mr. Sokoloff began his legal career as an Assistant Corporation Counsel in the New York City Law Department’s General Litigation Division.  While there, he represented the City of New York and its officials in their role as employer and service provider.

Mr. Sokoloff has earned a reputation in his field for defending difficult and high profile cases, including fatal police shootings and controversial land use matters.  In 2012, the authoritative SCOTUS blog named Mr. Sokoloff’s Supreme Court certiorari petition in Byrne v. Jackler, a First Amendment retaliation case, the “Cert. Petition of the Day,” later deeming it a “petition to watch,” with a “reasonable chance of being granted.”

Mr. Sokoloff lectures in the areas of federal practice, civil rights, employment, and municipal liability to attorneys, insurance companies, police departments, and school districts.  He has spoken to New York State Association of Towns, the New York State Conference of Mayors, the Suffolk County Bar Association, and other groups.
