Biography

Scott Nehs is the vice president, deputy general counsel and assistant corporate secretary for the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA), a national federation of 37 independent, community-based and locally operated Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies. The Blue System is the nation's largest health insurer covering over 100 million – one-in-three of all Americans. It is the largest single processor of Medicare claims in the nation, and holds the world's largest privately underwritten health insurance contract – the nearly 5.3-million-member Federal Employee Program® (FEP).

Having practiced law for more than 20 years, Nehs brings a wealth of experience to BCBSA where he advises senior leadership on the full range of strategic, reputational and operational issues handled by the Legal and Governance Division on behalf of the Association and the BCBS companies.

Prior to joining BCBSA, Nehs served at PepsiCo where he was the senior vice president of legal and government affairs for PepsiAmerica, Inc., a $5 billion NYSE corporation and the world’s second largest bottler of Pepsi branded products. Nehs was also a member of the company’s worldwide leadership team and held the offices of chief compliance officer and chief privacy officer.

Nehs’ eleven years in the beverage business afforded many opportunities to work on legal issues related to the rights of exclusive territories, the independence of licensees and brand protection. While managing a department of 20 attorneys and para-professionals in the United States and Europe, Nehs was responsible for antitrust, litigation, real estate, commercial contracts, employment disputes, and mergers and acquisitions.

He began his career at Wildman, Harrold, Allen & Dixon, a large litigation firm based in Chicago where he worked on a wide variety of litigation matters, trying civil and criminal cases in both the federal and state courts for business clients.

Nehs frequently shares his expertise as a speaker at legal seminars and other forums. He earned a bachelor’s in political science and sociology from Northwestern University and his law degree from the University of Wisconsin.
