Biography

Stew Schmella has practiced law throughout Texas since 2001. As a civil trial lawyer, Stew has handled a wide variety of cases on both sides of the docket, including insurance matters, personal injury cases, commercial cases, professional liability cases, employment cases, and toxic torts. Stew's extensive insurance experience includes litigating complex first-party and third-party insurance coverage matters. Stew has worked with a wide variety of individuals and businesses in civil disputes, including financial institutions, insurance carriers, legal and engineering professionals, and other businesses, large and small.

Stew traveled to Houston in 1994 to attend Rice University. Stew earned his bachelor's degree in political science from Rice in 1998. Following college, Stew attended the University of Law School, where he graduated magna cum laude in 2001.

Stew is a member of the Alternative Dispute Resolution sections of the State Bar of Texas and Houston Bar Association. Stew is also a member of the Texas Association of Mediators and the College of the State Bar of Texas.

Stew volunteers as a mediator at the Dispute Resolution Center of Harris County. Stew also volunteers to assist United States veterans through the Veterans Legal Initiative and the HBA Veterans Legal Clinic. Stew also speaks to schools and community groups as a member of the Houston Speakers Bureau.

Stew enjoys movies, cooking, and baseball. Stew is also a member of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR).

Stew makes his home in Houston with his wife, Sam, and their twins, Laney and Neil.
