Biography

Dr. Gibson earned his Psy.D. (Doctor of Psychology) in 1995 after completing his internship at The Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center where he specialized in behavioral medicine and neuropsychology. He went on to complete advanced training in rehabilitation and neuropsychology at Hollywood Medical Center in Hollywood Florida before entering into private practice specializing in forensic and neuropsychology. Dr. Gibson earned his board certification in pain management (AAPM) and in rehabilitation psychology (ABPS) and began consulting in both criminal and civil cases regularly, with worker’s compensation comprising 60% of his practice. From 1996 until 2005, Dr. Gibson was an adjunct professor at Nova Southeastern University, where he taught in both their doctoral psychology and osteopathic medicine programs. In 2003, Dr. Gibson was asked to establish a forensic neuropsychology training program at South Florida State Hospital, where he supervised trainees and provided consultation. In 2005 after earning his Master of Public Health/Epidemiology (M.P.H.), Dr. Gibson joined the faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center, where he was an associate professor of psychiatry and surgery. Dr. Gibson authored/co-authored numerous studies in behavioral medicine and neuropsychology and was the primary supervisor for the medical center’s new fellowship in clinical health psychology. During this time period, Dr. Gibson remained a commissioned officer (United States Army) and served as the lead behavioral science officer for the Virginia Army National Guard. Following several deployments and numerous consultations on sensitive federal cases, Dr. Gibson commissioned as an officer with the Central Intelligence Agency in 2012, where he now serves as the first behavioral medicine and neuropsychologist within the Agency’s Office of Medical Services. Dr. Gibson is responsible for evaluations for cause, including fitness for duty, return to duty, accommodations and medical disability retirement.  He also consults to the office of security, special operations and other components as an intelligence officer. Dr. Gibson is the owner and president of MedPsych of Virginia, a private practice specializing in behavioral medicine and neuropsychological consultation in Reston Virginia. His primary area of interest and expertise is in malingering/deception and symptom exaggeration. Dr. Gibson has provided expert consultation on thousands of medically-complicated cases, including mTBI, TBI, PTSD and poly-trauma. He has provided expert testimony on numerous cases in both Virginia and Florida. In 2014, he was awarded the status of Fellow with the American College of Forensic Examiners, where he served on the executive advisory board for many years. Dr. Gibson recently authored two text book chapters in The Oxford Handbook of Rehabilitation Psychology as well as Biopsychosocial Assessment in Clinical Health Psychology. He remains a Major in the United States Army Reserves and active in research with the Department of Defense.
