Steve Nelson

Biography

Steve Nelson is the EVP and Senior Director, ADR Services for Markel Surety and President of its construction risk management and consulting firm, SureTec Information Systems, Inc. For 19 years Steve practiced construction and surety law in Dallas, Texas. He was the Chief Executive Officer of an ENR Top 100 building contractor from 1995 to 2001. He  served as the chief claims officer of Markel Surety since 2001-2024, and has served since as the Senior Director of its ADR service operation.  Steve has served as the Chair of the Construction Law Sections of the Dallas Bar Association, Austin Bar Association, and the Construction Law Section of the State Bar of Texas. He is Board Certified in Construction Law by the State Bar of Texas. Steve is a Fellow of the American College of Construction Lawyers, a Distinguished Fellow of the International Academy of Mediators, a Fellow of the Center for Public Policy Dispute Resolution, designated as a Distinguished Credentialed Mediator by the Texas Mediator Credentialing Association, and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Texas at Austin School of Engineering, where he teaches a graduate course in Construction Industry Dispute Resolution.   Steve has mediated over 2,000 complex multi-party construction defect and architect/engineer professional liability cases for others.
