Melanie Schafer

Biography

As an Associate of the Medicare Compliance Group at Gordon & Rees, Melanie S. Schafer’s practice focuses on the resolution of Medicare compliance issues that arise in the settlement of workers’ compensation and general liability claims.

Prior to joining Gordon & Rees, Ms. Schafer worked as an associate in another national Medicare practice group and as a consulting attorney concentrating on Medicare compliance issues in institutional settings. She also handled liability claims for insurance company clients as an Associate at an insurance defense firm in Pittsburgh.

Ms. Schafer received her J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 2012. While at the university, she was a Dean’s Scholar and member of the Health Law Society. In addition, she served as a Certified Legal Intern in the Low Income Tax Clinic, worked with Southwestern Pennsylvania Legal Services and participated in the JHF Jonas Salk Medical Ethics Fellowship. In addition to her J.D., she earned an M.A. in English Language and Literature from the University of Michigan in 2012, where she taught English to undergraduates prior to leaving the Ph.D. program in order to attend law school.  She also earned an M.A.T. in English Education from the University of Pittsburgh in 2004, and a B.F.A. in Classical Music Performance from Carnegie Mellon University in 2001.

Ms. Schafer is licensed to practice law in Pennsylvania, the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, and the Third Circuit.
