Biography

THOMAS P. SCRIVO graduated from Fairfield University in 1985 and from Seton Hall University School of Law in 1989, where he served as an editor of the Law Review. He served as Judicial Clerk to the Honorable Arnold M. Stein, Superior Court of New Jersey, Appellate Division. He is admitted to practice in New Jersey and the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and the United States Supreme Court. He has served as an adjunct professor of law at Seton Hall University School of Law. He has extensive experience in the areas of complex commercial and corporate litigation, contract disputes, business litigation, banking litigation, labor and employment law, land use and zoning, construction litigation, health care law, real estate tax appeal litigation, estates and trusts litigation, professional liability litigation, patent, copyright, trademark infringement and anti-trust litigation, municipal law, ERISA, election law, environmental law, workers' compensation, toxic tort and product liability litigation, class actions, and securities litigation.

In his employment practice, Mr. Scrivo represents businesses in cases alleging wrongful discharge, discrimination, sexual harassment, retaliation, breach of contract, and related claims. He has litigated many cases involving the enforcement of restrictive covenants in employment agreements. He provides counseling to clients on all aspects of the employment relationship, including general employment advice and counseling, preparing employee manuals and handbooks, and conducting internal investigations. He also conducts management and employee training. He also has an active workers’ compensation practice, primarily focused on cases involving claims of occupational exposure as well as mass layoffs or plant closings.

In his municipal law practice, Mr. Scrivo serves as Township Attorney to two New Jersey municipalities. In addition, Mr. Scrivo has served as special counsel to municipalities for cases involving real estate tax appeals, labor and employment, civil rights litigation, public bidding and contracts, redevelopment law, and election law. He also represents developers in land use matters before planning boards, boards of adjustment and municipal bodies. He has extensive expertise in redevelopment law. Mr. Scrivo is the author of the treatise, New Jersey Local Government Deskbook, which is updated annually.

Mr. Scrivo is a past President of the Essex County Bar Association. In 2001, he served as Chair of the Essex County Bar Association’s WTC Disaster Relief Task Force, which coordinated the training of more than 250 attorneys to provide free legal services to families and victims of 9/11. He is a member of the American Bar Association, New Jersey State Bar Association, the Association of the Federal Bar of the State of New Jersey and the Trial Attorneys of New Jersey. In 2002, he was appointed by the New Jersey Supreme Court to the District V-B Ethics Committee, where he served until 2006. He regularly lectures at seminars presented by the New Jersey Institute of Continuing Legal Education, the Essex County Bar Association, and other groups.

In 2002, Mr. Scrivo was named one of New Jersey’s “Top 40 Lawyers under 40” by the New Jersey Law Journal. He was also presented with the Young Alumni Achievement Award in 2002 by the Peter W. Rodino, Jr. Law Society at Seton Hall University School of Law. He also serves as Vice Chair of the Essex County College Board of Trustees.
