Biography

Anistics, Alexander & Alexander, Chief Operating Officer
Anistics pioneered the application of information systems, finance, and analytics to risk financing for large organizations.  My science background came to a halt when an NYU Business School classmate asked me to join Anistics, a startup that was disrupting insurance-centric risk financing.   We educated organizations that they pay for own losses and we showed that risk analysis, cash flow, and after-tax measures determine optimum risk financing decisions.
Risk Sciences Group was the first firm to offer online risk management information systems (RMIS).   Technology made data analysis suddenly economic as the PC revolution put computer power in everyone’s hands.  RSG integrated diverse risk data and client-specific exposures with an intuitive user interface.  I became President of RSG and aggressively expanded its scope domestically and internationally.  By the mid-1990’s, the challenge was no longer affordable technology or access to data.
My decision to form Shelter Island Risk in 1994 was because RMIS systems produced “information” but risk managers needed “solutions”.  Shelter Island brings the skills of information systems, analytics, law and finance for risk management problem-solving.  Our client base includes the largest public, private, not for profit, and governmental organizations.  Shelter Island guides large organizations to use risk data more creatively and assists in selection and implementation of risk information technology.  Services include statistical analysis, computer modeling, claims audit, and actuarial services.  Art is part of innovative risk management.  I apply my drawing skills to our consulting business.  Good risk analysis parallels that of creating a good drawing:  choice of subject, composition, perspective, value, and color.
