Mr. Brown is an executive vice president and the chief claims officer with responsibility for Sedgwick’s total quality initiative, Performance 360®, as well as innovation. Darrell is based in our Long Beach, California, office.
Darrell has more than 20 years of experience in claims management. He joined Sedgwick in 2001 as an assistant claims manager. He subsequently worked as an operations manager and also as an area manager for the southern California region. Most recently, Darrell spent over five years as the workers’ compensation practice lead for Sedgwick. Before joining Sedgwick, Darrell worked as a claims manager for a third-party administrator specializing in public entities.
Darrell has been an instructor for the American Insurance Educational Association, teaching workers’ compensation advanced and workers’ compensation case law and labor code.
Darrell holds a self-insurance license in California. He has also earned the associate of risk management designation (ARM) through the AICPCU. Darrell received a bachelor’s degree in finance from California State University at Northridge.
Bad Faith Principles and the Impact of Customer Service

Claims departments are in effect a customer service function of the insurer. We will examine what is bad faith, and the various damages available. We will examine the instances and circumstances which may give rise to allegations of bad faith. In conclusion, we will discuss how to avoid and minimize bad faith exposure, including the various defenses available.

This 90-minute discussion will be led by industry experts in the strategic functions of Actuarial Science, Underwriting, Insurance Brokerage and Risk Management. The panel will provide attendees insights into their roles and terminology and demonstrate the importance of the Claims function on both the insurance company and the insured. Specific topics will include the impact of timely investigation, reserving and resolution beyond the actual claim file.

This course is designed to assist the claims professional in enhancing his/her communication skills to improve productivity, better serve the insured, and to appropriately communicate with colleagues. The course will use the DiSC profile and model. Students are asked to complete an assessment which includes a series of questions that ultimately produces a detailed report about the students’ communication style. The profile is electronically scored for those who take the test online although there is a paper test available with self-scoring.
SHARED COURSE - Navigating Relationships for Success

The students will be presented a claim scenario. Students will be assigned roles and ask questions of the claims examiner. The claims examiner will be required to respond, make recommendations and identify strategies for navigating these relationships keeping in mind the goal of claim resolution and career success.
