Mr. Brown is an executive vice president and the chief claims officer with responsibility for Sedgwick’s total quality initiative, Performance 360®, as well as innovation. Darrell is based in our Long Beach, California, office.
Darrell has more than 20 years of experience in claims management. He joined Sedgwick in 2001 as an assistant claims manager. He subsequently worked as an operations manager and also as an area manager for the southern California region. Most recently, Darrell spent over five years as the workers’ compensation practice lead for Sedgwick. Before joining Sedgwick, Darrell worked as a claims manager for a third-party administrator specializing in public entities.
Darrell has been an instructor for the American Insurance Educational Association, teaching workers’ compensation advanced and workers’ compensation case law and labor code.
Darrell holds a self-insurance license in California. He has also earned the associate of risk management designation (ARM) through the AICPCU. Darrell received a bachelor’s degree in finance from California State University at Northridge.

The efficient and appropriate handling of casualty claims begins and ends with the coverage analysis. This course discusses the framework for that analysis and identifies those considerations, outside of the policy, to be considered with confirming a coverage position. We will discuss the policy declaration, forms, and endorsements as well as the duty to defend versus the duty to indemnify standards. Also, we will discuss the importance of identifying the proper jurisdiction and applicable law, and the impact on the coverage analysis. Finally, addressing the significant importance of the claim coding. We will complete this program with a detailed discussion of the coverage analysis and issues presented by the case study.

Building on the foundation of Coverage 1, this course discusses the process of identifying whether a liability policy affords coverage to parties other than the named insured. We will discuss the analysis of the policy, endorsements and other evidence of an insured contract. Also, we will discuss the important distinction between the duty to defend and the duty to indemnity. Finally, we will review the key elements of the insurer’s response to a tender of defense. We will complete this program with an exercise outlining a coverage letter and tender response.

Litigation Management and Control
This course will provide an overview of the litigation process and the collaborative role between counsel and the claims professional. The course begins in covering how to determine when litigation is necessary and what controlling law and forum should apply. The course moves on through the various stages of litigation and the technical components of each. It wraps with discussing practical tips to manage litigation and control expenses.
