Understanding the coverage afforded and knowing what coverage is available is a challenge to the adjuster upon receipt of a new loss. This course will provide the participants with key coverage concepts for both Homeowner and Commercial policies both prior to their contact with the policyholder and throughout the course of their investigation.
After completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the coverage afforded under the applicable policy
- Recognize the need for non-waiver and/or reservation of rights
- Identify interest and property insured
- Explain and report coverage issues
- Confirm policy conditions

Investigation of Property Claims

The purpose of the Investigation Course is to introduce the audience to the life cycle of a property claim, both personal property claims and commercial property claims. Special focus is given to the importance of new loss taking within a claims organization. Further emphasis is given to the triage process, as well as the discipline of contents adjusting and management of additional living expenses. The course then proceeds to introduce the student to the role of cause and origin experts, special investigation experts and finally to the discipline and importance of subrogation and recovery.
After completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Develop the proper scope of the investigation
- Understand the tools that are available
- Explain the investigation life cycle
- Properly document the stages of the claim
- Recognize first party good faith investigation
- Recognize alternatives to consider prior to a lawsuit
- Identify the timing and uses of mediation
- Recognize when and how to choose arbitration over litigation
- Understand situations when a bench trial is possible and appropriate
Property Evaluation
This course has been designed for the Beginner to Early Intermediate Level Property adjuster or an experienced adjusters handling other insurance lines looking to make a transition into property claims adjusting. The student attending this course should expect to leave with a broad knowledge of Property Loss Value definitions and determinations, a basic outline of Property Claims Inspection Workflow Models, an understanding of personal lines policy provisions, conditions and limitations and basic Co-Insurance calculations as they apply to handling home owners type policies.
After completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the difference between RC and ACV and calculate the ACV and Market Value of property structure.
- Explain the settlement valuation for the different policy provisions.
- Calculate and value the loss adjustment.
- Explain waiver and estoppel, insured’s duties, proof of loss, and the appraisal procedure
Resolving Property Claims: Fulfilling the Commitment
Settling first party property claims with premium paying insureds who have suffered a loss to their personal property or their business can be routine or challenging. A claim is a customer’s moment of need, an opportunity for insurers to validate years of premium payments which can be crucial to retention and profitability. This course is designed to provide some tools to assist claim handlers in resolving claims promptly and fairly based on the terms and conditions in the insured’s policy.
After completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify methods to permit swift and accurate resolution of non-disputed claims
- Understand the techniques to properly address coverage denials
- Explain the techniques for resolving disputed claims
- Describe how to evaluate cost/benefits of appraisals, arbitration, mediation and other dispute resolution processes
Navigating the Property Claims Environment
